This paper examines Native Son by Richard Wright, a novel published in 1940 about Bigger Thomas, a poor African American man living on the South Side of Chicago during that time. The paper examines the theme of blindness in the novel, specifically discussing the manner by which Bigger himself is able to get a glimpse of individual power and personal agency when he recognizes the blindness of others, following his murder of Mary Dalton.
