This paper takes an historical view of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It observes that the crisis itself was about much more than simply missiles in Cuba, it was about the fight for dominance in Europe between the West and the Soviet Union. It concludes that we are living with the worst legacy of the Cold War now as so many nuclear and other mass-destruction weapons are potentially up for sale in the former Soviet republics.
