Over the past century hundreds of thousands of people have been lured to the America West by the promise of gold and golden dreams. Much of the impetus for the immigration from other parts of the country to California and other Western states came from gold and silver strikes at places like Colorados Pikes Peak strike in Colorado, the Last Chance Gulch in Montana, and the Forty-niner Gold Rush in California. This paper examines the continuing effect on the West and especially on California of its historied past as a place built on the promise of quick riches and other glamorous dreams.
