Thematic Influences in Herland, Hawaiis Last Queen, and 19th Century American Expansionism
This paper describes three things: the novel Her Land by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the annexation of Hawaii by the United States, and the spirit of expansionism rampant in the West during the 19th century. The common threads throughout all three are the conflicted nature of policies of expansion in the United States beyond the coast of the Pacific Ocean to the West.
