From a very young age, Nelson Mandela was a political animal. When only twelve-years old, Mandela's father died. Mandela did so, and attended the Witwatersrand University. Mandela was brought from prison to stand trial for treason along with seven comrades. Prison steeled Nelson Mandela -- what did not kill him made him stronger (Fotheringham, 57). Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela's account of his life, will be published later this month. Botha, however, placed conditions upon Mandela's release - Nelson would have to public ally denounce the violence of the ANC. Mandela refused.
