The History of the Whaling Industry on Long Island
This paper examines the history of the whaling industry on and around Long Island, New York. The paper charts the development of the industry from the first legal whaling company at the port of Southampton in 1650 until the 1924 when the last whaler finally gave up his harpoon and retired, ending the longest operating whaling industry in the northeastern United States.
