This paper shall discuss the long-term economic viability of strip malls in affluent suburban environs. To that end, the paper will examine some of the benefits of the strip mall model but also some of its pitfalls. Ultimately, the paper will conclude that the strip mall development plan should be abandoned in favor what planners are referring to as urban smart growth. Public sentiment and even some legislative measures are curbing the spread of strip malls; therefore, they should not be considered as viable in a long-term sense.
