Procrastination is especially common in the academic domain. Faculty estimates of student procrastination were even higher. Doctoral student procrastination may result in failure to finish dissertations. Second, help students set realistic goals for themselves. As the academic term progresses, it is advisable to encourage students reporting high levels of academic procrastination to actively monitor their activities and engagement with academic work. Formal goal setting and contracting help students develop skills in setting realistic, manageable goals. Personal counseling may also be beneficial for students whose academic procrastination reflects a "self-handicapping" strategy to maintain their self-esteem. 5 pgs. bibliography lists 7 sources.
