Geography of Melanesia

The geography of the Pacific has a long a strained history. And, unfortunately violence has a long history throughout this region (Henderson, p.17). Many of its islands are very small, but numerous in nature. Within this oceanic region, there is a sub-region called Melanesia. The sub-region of Melanesia is not defined by hard lines of nationality or even region. Melanesia is an area that includes islands like the Solomon Islands, New Hebrides, Fiji, and sometimes New Guinea. However, most qualify New Caledonia as the indigenous people of the Melanesia region. It is different from other parts of the world in many ways and yet similar in others. Religion for example, is filled with ghosts and demons and malevolent spirits (Campbell, p.21). Despite a lack of hard borders, all of the islands and countries near enough to the Melanesia Oceanic Region to be considered a member of the group have a rich history and unique cultures.
