In this paper, I will review Through Harsh Winter by Akemi Kikumura. This book is about Kikumuras mother's experiences of coming to America as a young immigrant and raising 13 children. If your grandmother or mother has ever given you unsolicited but useful and wise advise, then this engaging and interesting book will seem familiar in the experiences it portrays, even if you are not a Japanese immigrants. Letting her mother's own words and memories tell the story, Kikumura reveals the story of her mother Facing decades of poverty, hard physical labor, prejudice, and the loss of close family members, and how she ultimately triumphs.
