Characterizations in J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls .
This essay analyzes two characters in the play, "An Inspector Calls." Through this comparison of the father, Mr. Birling and his daughter, Sheila Birling, the essay explores the process of social responsibility, and the struggle involved in learning how to see oneself in relation to others. Priestley's play is a criticism of Edwardian values, and it questions the role of the individual in society. The two characters considered in this essay are compared as a way to reveal the conflict in this perspective, and dramatizes the ways people affect the lives of others. 5 pgs.
