Essay: Obasan by Joy Kogawa and In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje
Both Obasan by Joy Kogawa and In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje are novels that blend history and fiction as characters search for self-knowledge and their identities. Both novels deal with immigrant communities and the difficulties posed by language barriers. Beyond that, however, they are very different novels. In particular, they use the figure of the searcher in very different ways.
