Hrotsvita of Gandersheim was a remarkable woman, a hagiographer, playwright and epic historian who lived and wrote from about 935 to 1001 A.D. Her extant works include the legends of eight saintÂ’s lives in verse, six dramas in rhymed prose, two epic histories, three long prose prefaces, and several short works. Thus, Hrotsvita wrote in at least three distinct genres. From what is known of Hrotsvita, it seems likely that immense pre-planning went into her literary productions.
