The Historical and Cultural Significance of Oedipus Rex

This paper examines Sophocles' famed play Oedipus Rex, with some reference to another of his plays, Antigone. The purpose of the paper is to begin to situate Oedpius within the historical and cultural circumstances of ancient Greek society. In order to do this, the paper discusses the importance of divine law as well as the crime of hubris, both in a socially ideological sense as well as in the context of Oedipus Rex.
