This paper examines the quest for freedom in Margaret Atwood's novels, "Cat's Eye" (1988) and "The Handmaid's Tale" (1985). The former is the story of a women in contemporary society, the latter a science fiction story of a society that viciously oppresses women. In both women must use their wits, strength and souls to avoid the constraints of patriarchy and develop freedom and self-awareness. 5 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
