This paper is a speculative response by the therapist to the case of Jake, who is middle-aged, and is seeking therapy because he wants to learn how to deal with his anger. As long as he can remember, he has felt anger toward someone: his mother, his wife, his children, his boss, and his few friends. Jake also realizes that he fears getting close to people, and he would like to explore his fear of intimacy as well as his fear of his anger. The therapist recommends that Person-Centered Therapy be used to treat Jakes pervasive outwardly-directed rage and any self-rage that may underlie his fear of intimacy. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is also suggested as a short-term means of developing coping strategies for his anger in social situations.
