This paper discusses segmented assimilation between first and second generation Chinese immigrants to America, noting how the ties to old traditions are stronger for the older generation and may be maintained longer if the family unit is controlled more so that the pace of acculturation is slowed, which often happens with Chinese families, in part because the Chinese were discriminated against longer than other Asian groups.
