Contemporary Political Issues in Colombia: Paramilitaries, Drug Cartels, the United States, and Changing the Constitution
This paper is an analysis of the contemporary political issues that are facing Colombia as a nation and as a fledgling democracy. Specifically the paper addresses three political issues and then applies those to an understanding of President Uribe's current attempts to have the nation's Constitution changes to permit him to run for a second term. Those three points are: paramilitary groups, the drug cartels, and the political pressure the United States exerts on Colombian affairs.
