The French in Vietnam: Colonialism to The First Indochina War
This paper examines the role that France has played in the history and development of Vietnam from early colonial roots in the mid-nineteenth century up until the failed French re-takeover of Vietnam following World War II with the First Indochina War. Particularly, the paper examines the development of Vietnamese resistance to French rule and how efforts to indoctrinate the people ultimately failed in the face of overwhelming nationalism.
